In response to our call out for Urban Room activities, filmmaker and visual artist Soheila proposed three weekend sessions called Collective Photography of Hope. She wanted to bring local people together to explore how thinking, watching and framing “hope” **can generate and regenerate hope in our own and other’s lives.

The sessions would begin in an Urban Room space and then involve walking along Dudley High Street, through Dudley Market, through Green Man into Priory Park, returning via St James’s Street.

In each session, each participant will take just three photographs. What connects these three frames to each other is that they represent hope in us: maybe a memory of the past, maybe a good feeling of the present, maybe an inspiration of hope.

After this time exploring the town, the group will return to the Urban Room space to share their photos on a large screen and talk about why they are signs of hope, while also receiving simple technical photography tips. (For example respect the lines of the space, vertical and horizontal, colour, perspective).

The photographs would be brought together in an exhibition at the end of the project.

Hope In Community

The Arcade Cafe, community gathering in a place of warmth and welcome. People know each other, care for each other, and welcome the stranger.

The community of the people who came before - the hope in continuity and change co-existing. The castle, symbol of the enduring Self, protecting Dudley. The mediaevalist pub, gathering place and home to poetry Breakfast.

The hope in poets, reflective, listening, making beauty from human experience, inspiring and challenging us to see things in a new way.

This vibrant display of fresh ingredients is a testament to the community's rich diversity, moving forward together. In a setting where such abundance is rarely seen outdoors in the UK, Dudley High Street becomes a symbol of accessibility, shared cultural heritage, and a forward-looking spirit. It invites shoppers to explore new flavours, celebrate the richness of their shared community, and embrace the journey of progress.

Morning Light Finds Those Who Seek It

Morning Light Finds Those Who Seek It 130325.jpg

In this towns awaking streets, some seek not just the warmth of the sun, but a moment of solitude. ****Amidst the empty stalls and silent streets, our presence speaks of resilience, a quiet determination to find light even in the shadows. Hope isn't always found but sometimes sought.

Flowers gathered, waiting to be chosen and waiting to be loved.

A watering can left out in the cold speaks of the care needed to nurture love, to help it blossom.

Love grows here.

Looking Up

Framed by the strength of trees, the sky opens up — soft clouds drifting in sunlight like a breath held and released. A moment of stillness. A reminder to pause, to look up and to let in hope.

The Dancing Tree

Twisting and full of energy. Inspired by Susan Jeffers’ Dancing with Life; let go and trust the dance. A reminder to find glimmers of hope in daily life.

Between Light and Shadow

This frame reminds me of playing hide and seek in the park. The shadows ground me with memories of the past.  A space to reflect. To simply be.
